Slug Pellets:

Size Matters

Slug Pellets: Size Matters

When it comes to controlling slugs, bigger really does mean better. While most competitor pellets on the market are around 2.4mm long - and not even enough to feed one slug, De Sangosse Ferric Phosphate pellets are a robust 2.7 mm - and one or our pellets can typically feed 2 slugs. That’s more slug control per pellet, more even coverage, and less waste.

Pellets on the Ground vs Slugs Fed

It's easy to think that more pellets per square metre means better slug control. In fact, the opposite can be true. What really matters is how many slugs each pellet can stop. With cheaper, low-density pellets, a slug may need to eat 2-3 pellets before it receives a lethal dose. That means many slugs will take a bite and move on - leaving crops grazed and the bait wasted.

De Sangosse ferric phosphate pellets work differently. Thanks to the premium durum wheat base, Colzactive® attractant, and the unique stoichiometric 1:1 ratio of chelating agent to ferric phosphate, a slug only needs to consume 0.5 of a pellet to receive a lethal dose. This means a single pellet can kill 2 slugs.

The difference is dramatic. At a standard 5 kg/ha application rate, De Sangosse Ferric Phosphate can stop up to >4x more slugs per square metre than the next best competitor pellet.

Size Matters

A smaller pellet will not demonstrate consistent ballistic properties. A smaller pellet will present a higher volume/surface ratio leading to increased leaching potential and degradation - therefore resulting in poorer slug control. Ballistic properties are key to accurate application

  • Size, density and formulation affect the ballistic properties.
  • The De Sangosse pellet consistently outperforms all other pellets in application tests.

Why Bigger Works

  • Feed more slugs with fewer pellets  – one De Sangosse pellet can tackle multiple slugs, thanks to our colzactive technology and additive synergy.
  • Stay tough in wet conditions  – bigger, denser pellets last longer in the field, so slugs don’t get a second chance.
  • Cover more ground effectively – larger pellets spread more evenly across your crop, giving you consistent protection.

Smarter for Your Farm

Using bigger pellets isn’t just about slug control — it’s about working smarter, not harder:

  • Less product, more results  – fewer pellets mean less time spreading and and high slug kill.
  • Better stewardship  – heavier pellets are less likely to drift.
  • Peace of mind  – consistent pellet size means predictable results and reliable slug control.

Farmer Takeaways

  • One De Sangosse Ferric Phosphate pellet typically feeds 2 slugs, giving you up to >4x more slug control per sqm than the next best wet process competitor pellet.
  • Bigger pellets survive wet conditions better.
  • Even spread gives more reliable control.
  • Smarter application saves time, money, and effort.

Bottom line:

When it comes to slug pellets, size matters. With De Sangosse, bigger means more slugs fed, more protection, and more peace of mind.
